I have noticed lately a number of comments on who I (we) am in Christ, or maybe it is just me. Awhile back I started writing some of these down. So, I thought I would share some of what I have.
We all seem to need reminding on this point. We see it on posters, movies like Overcomer, songs (I am thinking of Remind Who I Am by Jason Gray), just for starters. The struggle to remember who we are, has an effect on self-esteem, depression, our sense of panic when our world seems turned upside down.
Let’s start right at the beginning.
We are Created
We are not just created but planned for – to do and be just where and what we are.
God not only created man and woman or male and female but created us in his image. So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. Gen 1: 27
Also, he planned for and created each of us just as we are. We are fearfully (remarkably, awesomely) and wonderfully made. For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well. My frame was not hidden from you, when I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in your book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of them. Psalm 139:13-16.
He knew us before the creation (foundations in KJV) of the world. He chose US. (also John 15:16). even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him. In love, he predestined us for adoption as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will. Ephesians 1: 4-5
Have you ever thought about that? God knew us (in every way imaginable) before he created this world. Before the earth was formless and void (Gen 1:2). We are so important to Him he had us planned. He knew us and all the circumstances and difficulties that got us where we are. Even though he knew all the nasty, horrible sinful thoughts and desires we have, he chose us. He knew our fears. And in spite of everything, he knew we would be his.
Knowing this we can conclude we are not a mistake or chance happening. He wanted us, just as we are.
We are free
Free from the sin and slavery of this world. Also, we are free from condemnation.
Christ has set us free. For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery. Galatians 5:1 and For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death. Romans 8:2.
We are a new creation (in Christ) Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. 2 Corinthians 5:17
We are forgiven and redeemed. In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace,(Ephesians 1:7) and in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins. Colossians 1:14
There are so many other options, loved, beloved, accepted, glorified, healed, justified. The list is almost endless. So, next time you are feeling insignificant and worthless. Start thinking about who you are in Christ. Make a list.
Finally, let me leave you with one last verse.
I have loved you with an everlasting love; therefore I have continued my faithfulness to you. Jeremiah 31:3
